Ahu’ena Heiau Inc. Concludes Heiau Restoration Project
Kailua-Kona, Hawaii – Ahu‘ena Heiau, Inc. is concluding a year-long project to restore the ancient and culturally significant Heiau located in Kailua-Kona on Hawaii Island. The project, funded in part by the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority’s (HTA) Kūkulu Ola: Living Hawaiian Culture Program (LCHP) restored the Heiau, which was damaged in the March 2011 tsunami.

Volunteers contributed nearly 3,000 hours of service to restore the Anu‘u Tower, Hale Pahu, and Ki‘i as well as repair the tsunami damaged foundation.
The heiau is located on the grounds of the King Kamehameha Kona Beach Hotel. On the National Register of Historical Places with the United States Department of the Interior as well as the Hawaii Register of Historic Places, many believe the Heiau to be one of the most culturally significant sites in Hawaii. Although located on private property, Ahu‘ena Heiau is open to the public. Over 100,000 people, including cultural practitioners, school groups, Hawaiian civic organizations, and tourists visit the Heiau annually.
Formed in 1993, Ahu‘ena Heiau, Inc. is a nonprofit organizations comprised of volunteers from the West Hawaii community, serving as the primary caretakers of the Heiau. Partnering with HTA, CNHA is the training and technical assistance provider for the 2012 HTA Kūkulu Ola: Living Hawaiian Culture Program and the Natural Resources Program.
